Response strength of a high-level visual neuron to each 3D shape stimulus is indicated by background color (bright red = 70 action potentials per second). Stimuli evolved across 10 generations (50 stimuli each final generation is shown here), guided by neural responses. High response to stimuli containing a dentate configuration near the upper right emerged in two separate lineages.
